After the last trailer forInfinity Warwas released in March, many reports from the set were released withinterviews conducted between the Russo Brothersover the summer. At the time, the directors talked a lot about how audiences were going to get a look into Thanos' backstory, which had fans pretty excited. However, in a recent interview, the directors discussed cutting the Mad Titan’s origin fromInfinity Warand why they felt that they had to do it. The movie is still very much the villain’s show, so don’t fret.
Thebackstory of Thanoshas been on the minds of many Marvel fans over the last several months and they were looking forward toInfinity Wardelving into the villain’s history. Now, in a new interview, the Russo Brothers admit that they had to cut out much of the Mad Titan’s backstory due to time constraints. This actually makes sense since there are so many superheroes stuffed intoInfinity War. Anthony Russo explains.
“We were considering showing (Thanos') backstory, but ultimately felt it wasn’t necessary for the movie… (Infinity Waris still) told from his (Thanos') point of view.”
This is certainly a lot different from what the Russo Brothers were talking about over the summer of 2017. But, as previously noted, it makes a lot of sense becauseInfinity Waris stuffed to the brim with superheroes who all have their own stories going on as well. It’s assumed that we’ll get flashes of some of Thanos' backstory though. We’ve already seen teases in the trailers and promotional materials, so there’s still a chance that it will be explored, but not as in depth as once imagined.
As for what Thanos will be like inInfinity Warand the reasoning behind his motivations,Josh Brolin recently shed some light on the subject. Basically, Thanos was an outsider growing up who didn’t look the same as everybody else and therefore wasn’t treated like everybody else as a result. In the end, it’s his experiences that he had growing up and developing that led to his insanity. Brolin had this to say.
“He’s different from his family. They’re all Titans and they all look similar, but he was born deformed. You see how he grew up, you see he was like the Quasimodo of this time, or if you’ve ever read Perfume (Patrick Süskind ’s 1985 novel about a serial killer who craves beautiful scenes but is disgusted by the smell of humanity), it’s a great parallel to Thanos. He stuck out. He was an anomaly.He was a freak. And that lent to this apparent insanity.”
Josh Brolin also reveals thatThanos is very intelligent, which is something that most people don’t know or take into consideration when dealing with him.Infinity Warwill more than likely have to address some of his backstory for this all to make sense, or at least allude to it. We might be in a situation likeThe Last Jediwhere the novelization or comics will share more background information that wouldn’t fit inInfinity War.
