No Time to Die, otherwise known as James Bond 25, is finally coming our way next year. The long-awaited sequel toSpectrewill be Daniel Craig’s final turn as the iconic MI6 spy. The send-off for this version of 007 is getting a helping hand fromFleabagcreator Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who was brought on late in the process to make some additions to the screenplay. Now, Waller-Bridge has opened up a bit about her contributions.
The rising star was recently speaking about her career in a radio interview.Phoebe Waller-Bridgerecently won an Emmy for her work on the acclaimedFleabagand signed a major overall deal at Amazon. But her work on Bond has, rightfully so, been getting a lot of attention, as she’s thefirst female screenwriter to take on James Bondin decades. But, as she tells it, her contributions were tweaks. Here’s what Waller-Bridge had to say about it.
“They were just looking for tweaks across a few of the characters and a few of the storylines. When I came on board I was just facilitating as [many] of their ideas and their instincts as possible.”
The writer, producer and actress added that here work added “little spices” to the script. She also added that she wrote “a couple of bits and pieces of my own, and hope that they survive the process.” Filming recently wrapped on the movie and director Cary Fukunaga is ushering it through the post-production process. When asked if she was brought on to help shift the misogynistic tone of the franchise, Phoebe Waller-Bridge had this to say.
“They were already doing that themselves. They’re having that conversation with themselves the whole time. It (her involvement) was much more practical. Just, ‘You’re a writer, we need some help with these scenes. And you come up with some dialogue for these characters.”
Phoebe Waller-Bridge willshare writing credit for the No Time to Die scriptwith four other parties. Bond series regulars Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, as well as known script doctor and filmmaker Scott Z. Burns, and Cary Fukunaga. It’s a little unclear how those credits will be split up officially speaking, but it’s relatively unusual to have five people work on a screenplay, at least five people who will ultimately be credited anyway.
The movie will see Bond coming back out of semi-retirement to take on a mysterious new villain played byBohemian Rhapsodystar and recent Oscar-winner Rami Malek. The bigger question is, can this sendDaniel Craig’s 007out in style? And will the movie manage to satisfy long-time fans while also making it feel progressive and modern?
