Could we see the return of Owen Lars, aka Luke Skywalker’s uncle Owen, to theStar Warsuniverse in theObi-Wan KenobiDisney+ series? According to actor Joel Edgerton, it’s a very real possibility. For those who perhaps don’t recall, Edgerton played the part of Owen in George Lucas' prequel trilogy in bothAttack of the ClonesandRevenge of the Sith. But it seems we perhaps haven’t seen the last of the younger Lars.
At this point, little is known about the Obi-Wan show, other than the fact thatEwan McGregorwill be reprising his role as the famed Jedi. During a recent podcast appearance while promoting his new movieThe King, Joel Edgerton was asked about the possibility of returning to a galaxy far, far away. Naturally, the actor can’t say much right now, given how secretive things at Lucasfilm tend to be. That said, Edgerton had this to offer.
“There is a very real possibility. There’s potentially an assassin on a rooftop just outside the window if I say the wrong thing. I’d love to say all sorts of things. I’m just not going to.”
That’s about as much as we could expect any non-confirmed potential cast member to say about aStar Warsproject at this stage of the game. That said, it would make a great deal of sense forUncle Owento return. The show is set to take place roughly eight years after the events ofRevenge of the Sith, which puts it about 11 years away from the events ofA New Hope. Owen, as we know, is burned to a crisp alongside Luke’s aunt Beru during that movie. But he would be alive and well during that time period.
InA New Hopeit’s strongly suggested that Owen knows Obi-Wan, or Ben, more than he lets on. It’s possible the show could explore their relationship a bit more in-depth. Other characters that could potentially appear includeDarth Mauland Darth Vader. Both would make sense for their own reasons, but for the moment nothing has been confirmed. The series was announced during Disney’sD23 Expoover the summer following months of speculation. Originally, this was set to be a standalone movie that was transformed into a Disney+ series following the lackluster performance ofSoloat the box office.
Deborah Chow (Iron Fist,Better Call Saul) has been tapped to direct the series, with Hossein Amini (The Alienist,Drive) on board to write. Chow also directed episodes ofThe Mandalorian, the first live-actionStar WarsTV series that will debut on Disney+ when it launches on November 12. Lucasfilm is also developing aRogue Oneprequel show centered on Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor. The Obi-Wan Kenobi series does not yet have a premiere date set, but we’ll be sure to keep you posted as further details are made available.
