Now it sounds like 20th Century Fox is changing its tune in terms of ratings and its own Marvel Cinematic Universe. Yesterday, we got word that the upcoming Mutant spinoffX-Forcemay arrive with anR rating. Now we have confirmation that the studio is seriously considering the restrictive rating for it’sHugh Jackmanswan songWolverine 3.
As soon as the numbers forDeadpoolrolled in this past President’s Day weekend, it was heavily speculated that every major studio would quickly put an R rated superhero movie into development. And Fox certainly isn’t wasting any time making these judgments come true. It’s not clear if the R rating bolstered or diminishedDeadpool’s take at the box office. But some are looking to that as the reason for it’s success.
According toReddituser RayChaos,Wolverine 3is definitely anticipating an R rating. This news arrived during Toy Fair 2016, in New York, which has been humming along since Saturday. The Fox presentation teased this potential rating in a flyer that was disturbed at the event, which you can see below in all it’s glory.
This isn’t the first time that the X-Men franchise has filtered with a R rating. For a long time, it was thought that 2013’sThe Wolverinemight be tailored for restricted audiences. While the movie eventually debuted in theaters as PG-13, it later came to the home market with an alternate unrated cut, giving us the bloodiest, most violent Wolverine adventure yet. At this time, no plot details have been released forWolverine 3. It is believed thatPatrick Stewartwill reprise his role as Charles Xavier in the adventure as a prominently featured character. James Mangold, who directedThe Wolverine, will be back, working from a script by David James Kelly.
It was just yesterday that directorTim Millerand comic book creatorRob Liefeldconfirmed that X-Force could get an R rating. Here’s what they had to say about that.
“I think there are some stories that could be R-rated. I don’t know what they are, I mean I think the mainlineX-Menmovies have their own tone, which is a more operatic tone. It’s more dramatic, it is more PG-13 in a way.X-ForceI could see beingR-rated, and who knows? I’m saying I could imagine a universe in which [X-Force is R-rated].”
20th Century Fox is also developingThe New Mutants, which has been rumored to featureDeadpoolstarBrianna Hildebrandreturning as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, and there are also rumors thatBryan Singerwill return to directX-Men 7. The studio is also getting ready to start production on theX-Menspinoff,Gambit. But it’s highly doubtful that any of these other movies will arrive with an R rating, as they are tailored more towards a younger audience.
