Earlier today, a number of superhero luminaries showered heaps of praise upon the riskyDeadpool, which, against all odds, became abox officehit, earning $135 million in its opening weekend. One of the filmmakers who praised the movie wasGuardians of the GalaxydirectorJames Gunn, who speculated that the movie’s success could lead to a string of R-rated superhero movies trying to capture the same magic that Deadpool did. As it turns out, just before the movie’s release, producerSimon Kinbergtook part in a Q&A session with directorTim Millerand comic book creatorRob Liefeld, who said it was possible that the upcoming 20th Century Fox projectX-Forcecould get an R rating.

“I think there are some stories that could be R-rated. I don’t know what they are, I mean I think the mainlineX-Menmovies have their own tone, which is a more operatic tone. It’s more dramatic, it is more PG-13 in a way.X-ForceI could see beingR-rated, and who knows? I’m saying I could imagine a universe in which [X-Forceis R-rated].”

x-force

X-Forcewas first announced back in 2013, when 20th Century Fox brought onJeff Wadlow(Kick-Ass 2) to write the script and possibly direct. Last week, just days before Deadpool hit theaters, starRyan Reynoldsrevealed thatX-Forcewas his top priority, and while no cast members have been confirmed yet, Deadpool was part of theX-Forcelineup in the comics books, which were also created byRob Liefeld.Ryan Reynoldseven appeared in a brief video withOlivia Munn, who playsPsylockeinX-Men: Apocalypse, and, in the comics, was also anX-Forcemember.

As of now, 20th Century Fox hasn’t given an official green light forX-Force, but that may soon happen, in the wake of Deadpool’s success. It’s also worth noting that, during one of the post-credit scenes,Ryan Reynoldsrevealed that Cable, theX-Forceleader, will appear inDeadpool 2, which is already moving forward at the studio, withRhett ReeseandPaul Wernickalready working on the script. Cable’s inclusion in this sequel could help set the table for theX-Forcemovie, but we’ll have to wait and see.
