Omar Sy, who played Bishop inX-Men: Days of Future Past, has beencast as the lead of Netflix’sExtractionTV series, perVariety. The show will be part ofthe greaterExtractionuniverse, which is based on thepopular films that starred Chris Hemsworth. Sy also stars in Netflix’sLupinseries.
The streamer has already released the plot of the series:
“Set in the high-octane world of ‘Extraction,’ this action thriller follows a mercenary (Sy) as he navigates a dangerous mission to rescue hostages in Libya. Trapped between warring factions and ruthless killers, the series delves into the emotional struggles of conflicted and flawed characters, each facing trauma, betrayal, and life-or-death choices.”
The show will be executive produced byAvengers’Joe and Anthony Russoalong with Angela Russo-Otstot, Scott Nemes, and Chris Castaldi. The director of the twoExtractionfilms,Sam Hargrave, is also producing. Joe wrote the screenplays for the two films, which werebased on the graphic novel,Ciudad, by Ande Parks.Glen Mazzara(The Walking Dead), also an executive producer and writer, will be the series' showrunner.
Mazzara was ecstatic about the casting of Sy and the showrunner’s role behind-the-scenes on the show:
“I’m a very lucky man. Omar is a huge talent. Joe, Anthony, and Angela have welcomed me into the AGBO family. The team at Netflix is truly the best I’ve ever worked with. Very lucky indeed.”
The first news of anExtractionTV series spinoff was in Dec. 2023and with the casting of Sy as the lead character, production could conceivably begin very soon. And while it may be far-fetched to think it could debut later this year on Netflix,a 2026 release date makes more sense. Expect more casting news in the coming weeks.
There Will Be an ‘Extraction 3’ With Hemsworth Returning
With Netflix and the producers expanding theExtractionuniverse into a TV series, there has beentalk of a third filmsince beforeExtraction IIdebuted in the summer of 2023, and ended up being one of the streamer’smost watched movies. In Oct. 2024,it was revealed by the Russo Brothers that the development ofExtraction 3was pretty far along, and Hargrave would return to direct it. It is also expected that Hemsworth will return as his popular character, Tyler Rake. Plot details haven’t been revealed yet, but it’s reasonable to expect the Russo Bros. and Hargrave to deliver even more innovative action sequences.
While at the New York Comic Con,Joe gave fans an idea of what was happening:
“We’re in the middle of working on that story right now. Hard at work. We’re hoping to go into production on it next year. It’s definitely filming next year. I’m just being cagey because it’s more fun.”
Extraction 2 Becomes One of Netflix’s Most Watched Movies
Extraction 2, the latest title in the Chris Hemsworth action saga for Netflix, hits another milestone for AGBO.
Extraction debuted in 2020 and delivered an explosive film that holds a67% critical and 71% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Three years later,Extraction 2premiered on Netflix and wasan even bigger film that, in many regards, was better than the first. That’s a rarity when it comes to action films, and both critics and fans responded positively. The sequel has an80% critical and 85% positive rating on RT. If the third film is able to shoot this year, it could debut on Netflix in 2026.
